How to build a pre-game routine

Create a simple routine you can rehearse before competition.

Make preparation familiar

A pre-game routine organizes what happens before an event. A pre-performance routine is a shorter sequence before a particular action, such as a serve. Both should fit the sport and competition rules. Avoid a routine so elaborate that a schedule change makes it unusable.

Build your pre-game checklist

Confirm arrival time, equipment and the team’s warm-up instructions. Choose one tactical focus with your coach. Leave room for delays. Physical warm-ups should follow appropriate coaching guidance; this guide focuses on organization and attention rather than prescribing exercise.

Design a short action routine

For a serve, an example might be: check the target, settle into your usual stance, use one cue and commit. This is an illustration, not a universal sequence. Practice the routine in training before relying on it during a close match.

Rehearse interruptions

Ask your coach to vary the timing within normal practice. Learn which parts of the routine matter when the official speeds things up or play is delayed. Keep the sequence flexible enough to serve you instead of becoming a superstition.

Evaluate the process

After competition, ask whether you remembered the routine and whether the cue directed attention usefully. Do not judge it on one result. Research on pre-performance routines supports their potential performance benefit, including under pressure, but routines still need practice and individual adjustment.
